The penis envy mushroom is a cultivated strain of the magic mushroom species Psilocybe cubensis, named for its distinctive morphology: a thick wrinkled stem, a small bulbous cap that often fails to fully open, and a characteristic phallic shape that gives the strain its name.
The penis envy strain is widely regarded as one of the most potent strains of Psilocybe cubensis available in cultivation, with psilocybin and psilocin concentrations that are typically 50 to 100 percent higher than ordinary Psilocybe cubensis strains
Penis envy mushrooms are not a separate biological species. They are a cultivar of Psilocybe cubensis, the same species as the more familiar golden teacher, B+, and other common cultivated strains. The penis envy strain was developed in the United States in the 1970s, reportedly by mycologist Steven Pollock from a Psilocybe cubensis culture originally obtained by ethnobotanist Terence McKenna.
The strain has been maintained and reproduced through generations of home cultivators since, with numerous sub-varieties such as albino penis envy, penis envy uncut, and trans envy emerging from selective breeding. All share the high-potency profile that defines the original strain.
